People Helping People to Help Themselves
October 17, 2007
The leaves are falling and cooler weather has arrived. We hope you are enjoying these picture perfect days.

Along with the cooler weather, many residents have been receiving electric bills for the extremely hot weeks that have blown the budget. Even families in small apartments where the insulation is minimal are struggling with high utility bills. Requests for utility assistance in September reached an all time high. Unfortunately, during the same time NFCC's income for assistance dropped and we have had to turn many families away. Can you imagine what it is like to have your water or power turned off?

We are very grateful to those of all who have been able to help NFCC with food or funds. Please know that all moneys received for assistance go directly to help someone in our community with an emergency need.

We are pleased to invite you to NFCC's Annual Meeting on Wednesday, November 7 at 7:30 a.m. We want to share with you what great work is going on at NFCC. Join us for breakfast, a tour and a quick update on NFCC this year. We'll feed you, uplift you and have you on your way by 9:00 a.m. Please let us know if you are coming. (bduffy@nfcchelp.org)

In this issue you'll find information about our Warm Coat Drive, another request for food and information about the holiday program. You'll meet another of our neighbors who needed help and some of our young volunteers who have been helping with the Holiday Program. We're saying thanks to Case Worker Sharon Brown and invite you to the Grand Opening of Let's Eat in John's Creek.

Thanks for letting NFCC into your busy day.

Barbara Duffy

Warm Coat Day
Once again, NFCC will be collecting new and gently used jackets and coats in October for families in need. Families who qualify for NFCC's Holiday Program are being invited to Waller Park Gym on Saturday, October 27 to select a "new" coat for each member of the family.

Last year families lined up before sunrise to wait their turn to "shop" for coats. 2,000 coats were given out in just 2 hours, but for the second year in a row, NFCC ran out of children's coats. The last 100 families in line left with vouchers to use in the Thrift Shop as coats became available. Please help us collect enough coats this year to serve all our families.

Volunteers will be collecting coats during the week of October 22. Call for the location of collection drop sites or bring your donations to NFCC. Plan your group's collection now. Call Volunteer Coordinator Karen Rupp at 770-640-0399 or KRupp@nfcchelp.org.

Let's not run out of coats for the children this year!

Meet Our Neighbor
Charles is a single father with custody of his two year old son. They share an apartment in Roswell with his brother. Charles suffers from kidney failure and is in need of a kidney transplant. His brother is a match and plans are underway for his brother to donate a kidney. Multiple medical appointments have limited his ability to secure work so Charles was short his part of the rent. Transplant surgery has now been scheduled. NFCC assisted with rent in August and September.

Thanks Sharon
Sharon Brown has been a caseworker since 2000 and steps aside from part-time casework in September. During her seven years at NFCC Sharon developed a talent and interest in helping clients access medical care. She spends extra time interpreting educational and medical resources and listening to client's hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow. Her quiet serenity has been a comfort to hundreds of NFCC families seeking help.

Sharon's special joy are her six young grandchildren with whom she will now be able to spend more time. You may still find Sharon at NFCC filling in as needed and helping with the holiday program.

Fun in the Thrift Shop
Volunteers and customers enjoy a good sale and there is always something happening at the Thrift Shop. This month Halloween costumes and decorations are on display. In addition to seasonal sales, check out our Fabulous Fridays for all kinds of extra bargains. Shop early and often. You'll never know what you might find.

Holiday Program
NFCC is busy qualifying families for holiday assistance. To be eligible the family brings photo IDs, proof of income, proof of residence and proof of each child. If school age, the parent must prove the child is attending school. By the end of September, 370 families had already qualified for holiday help.
Because some of the families speak only Spanish, Spanish speaking students from area high schools are assisting NFCC with the registration process. In the photo above, Milton High students Melissa Buckman (left) and Samantha Gridley talk with Matilde about her children's Christmas wishes. Above right, Northview High students Sarah Ryu (left) and Nicole Johnston talk with Margarita. Below, other high school students translate letters parents have written to the sponsor telling them about their family.

To find out how you can help with the Holiday Program, contact Holiday Coordinator Debra Winter at 770-640-0399 or e-mail at holidays@nfcchelp.org.
